Two TreesA portion of your soul has beenentwined with mine A gentle kind of togetherness, whileseparately we stand. As two trees deeply rooted inseparate plots of ground, While their topmost branchescome together, Forming a miracle of laceagainst the heavens.

About This Quote

This poem from the 18th century by English poet, William Shenstone, describes a union of souls so strong that you cannot pull apart. The metaphor of two trees describes the union of a man and a woman in love. In this poem, the man is a tree and the woman is a tree, but to further drive home the metaphor, the woman is a tree with its roots entwined with the man’s. If you were able to look at one tree from a distance, you would not see any indication that the other tree was connected to it.

But from close enough to see both trees from one place, you would notice that their roots were intertwined. In this way, each tree cannot be separated from the other. People who are together in love often describe this type of togetherness as if their souls were woven together.
